Reach Out
Hello World! It's Kodi here to tell you that you should reach out to anyone and everyone that inspires you because you never know what could come of it.
During my most recent trip to London a very good friend and I were fortunate enough to get the last two tickets to see Ralph Fiennes in Man + Superman at the National Theatre. Being two enormous theater dorks we were absolutely thrilled to spend three hours of our evening watching outstanding actors perform Shaw. Naturally, we were blown away by the talent of the stars featured in the show, but it was Tim McMullan who really took my breath away.
Even after I got home from my trip, I couldn't get his performance out of my head, so I decided to tell him. Naturally I never imagined that he would ever receive my letter let alone reply. Within a month of sending my letter thanking him for being such an inspiration and asking what his advice would be to an aspiring actor, I received a two page, handwritten, heartfelt reply.
Not only was I blown away by the effort he made to return my letter and answer my questions but also by the phenomenal advice he gave. Although I had asked more specifically career-oriented questions, his answers easily apply to life. He told me to follow my heart and do projects that really inspire me. He said to always remember the reasons that you love what you are doing and to hold on to those when you have to work on something or with someone who does not keep you energized and passionate. Going along with working with people who aren't your favorite, he said to never burn bridges, because you never know who might come around to be working with you again. But above all he emphasized to always stay true to who you are and what you love. These are all great lessons to hold close in a career as well as in life.
After receiving his letter I had a surge of confidence and realized that no one is truly unreachable. Inspiration is such a big part of leading a fulfilled, creative, and happy life so why not let the people who inspire you know how grateful you are. I believe that you should always reach out, because you never know who will reach back.
