Always a Choice
Hello Internet! It's Kodi here to give you a little anecdote from recent events in my life. I recently had quite a whirlwind of a day which taught me a valuable lesson. I learned that having a good day versus having a bad day is entirely up to me. I only need to see the good that happened and focused on the joy that was in my life on that day. I truly believe that happiness is a state of mind and our reactions to events that happen in our lives is really the only thing that we have control over.
So, a couple of days ago I was pulled over for the first time in my life and was given my first ticket. It was one of the most heart-racing experiences of my life. Overall it was a pretty funny experience and I am so incredibly glad to have had one of my best friends with me in the car (we were on the way to Disneyland). She kept me sane and kept telling me how everything was going to be just fine and I hadn't done anything wrong. The story of getting the ticket is pretty funny on its own, but that isn't the point of this post.
The point of this post is to prove that no matter how terrible something is, there is always some joy to be found in it and a lesson to be learned. After getting pulled over, ticketed, and lost we finally got back on the road to Disneyland and almost immediately passed an accident, a car broken down in the middle of the freeway, and a car smoking with a fire truck next to it. We were both a little bit spooked, and getting pulled over didn't seem so bad anymore. For all we know, if we hadn't spent those 30 minutes off course, we very easily could have been one of those accidents.
So after getting our minds wrapped around what had happened we got on with our day, determined to have as much fun as physically possible at Disneyland. And that is exactly what we did. We were even more grateful to be alive and in each others lives than we normally would be. And on top of that we had one of those fantastic and magical Disney experiences. I happened to be wearing a flowing turquoise maxi skirt that day and at one point during the day Princess Ariel walked by and said that she absolutely loved my skirt because it reminded her of her fins. Naturally, being an enormous Disney fan I almost fainted. All of the heart pounding nervousness from the morning had become elation--I had been complimented by a Disney Princess.
So, in the end, the day ended up being a truly great one even though I had the terrifying experience of receiving my first ticket. I was made incredibly aware of the gift of life, great friends, and the magic of Disney. I believe that everything in life happens for a specific reason, and I am truly grateful for that day. We may not have total control over the events that happen in our lives, but we do have complete control over how we react to and feel about them.
